A number of people are now questioning the validity of the death of Kobe Bryant after he was shot dead by police officers during a confrontation with a group of people in Memphis.
According to TMZ, a source claims to have heard about the incident from friends of Bryant.
According the report, the alleged incident happened at a party on Saturday night at a home where the Lakers star was staying.
The alleged altercation started after two men reportedly started throwing bottles at a man who was also at the party, but ended when the men fled the scene.
A few minutes later, two other men who had been there the night before approached Bryant and confronted him, TMZ reported.
A second man, later identified as 20-year-old Darius Williams, reportedly punched Bryant in the face, knocking him to the ground and putting his hands around his neck.
The incident ended when police arrived.
“A man at a residence in the area of Shelby and Madison Streets came to the residence and was shot,” Memphis police said in a statement.
“The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment.”
The report did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding the shooting, but sources told TMZ that police were “looking into it.”
In a statement released to TMZ on Monday, Bryant’s representative said that Bryant “has been in stable condition.”
The statement said Bryant was not involved in the shooting.
A number other people are speaking out in support of Bryant’s family, including his girlfriend, Rihanna.
“Kobe’s death has been a tragedy for all involved and it is with great sadness and shock that we report his passing,” Rihanna’s representative, Sarah H. Lee, said in the statement.
According a report in The Associated Press, Williams has been charged with murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault.
He is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail without bail.
